OPELIKA, Ala.- The No. 35 Kennesaw State women's golf team began play at the NCAA Auburn Regional on Monday at the par-72 Saugahatchee Country Club.

"This is not the day we had planned to earn our way out of regionals but that's the way golf is," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We prepared well but didn't take advantage today and find ourselves in a position where we will need to go low the next two days. The positive is we have done that before and I know these five are capable of red numbers."

The Owls posted a 20-over par 308 in the opening round and are in 15th place. No. 6 Vanderbilt leads the 18-team field at 1-under par 287.

ASUN Player of the Year Clara Aveling paced the Owls with a 2-over par 74. The redshirt-junior rolled in 14 pars and a birdie during her round to sit in a tie for 20th. Her 2-over par 74 is tied for the seventh-lowest round by an Owl in an NCAA Regional.

Roanne Tomlinson carded a 4-over par 76 and resides in a tie for 51st. She played her opening nine holes at even par with seven pars.

Charlotte Charrayre is tied for 71st place. She recorded a 6-over par 78. The senior rolled in seven pars over her final 12 holes of the day.

Chloe Thornton posted a 8-over 80 and is perched in a tie for 82nd. After a slow start, the freshman responded with six pars over her final nine holes.

Medy Thavong carded a 10-over par 82 and is tied for 91st.

The Owls will tee off at 9 a.m.CT with Clemson and Houston in round two of the NCAA Auburn Regional on Tuesday, April 7.
