Trio of Owls Collect ASUN Athlete of the Week Awards

KENNESAW, Ga.- 
DJ Akindele, Jordan Hewing  and Julija Tarvide  were named ASUN Outdoor Freshman, Track and Field Athletes of the Week the conference announced on Wednesday.


All three collected the awards based on their strong performances at the Don McGarey Invitational.


DJ Akindele won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.04. He also ran a leg on the Owls 4x100m relay team that finished first in 40.12 seconds. That time established a new school record and ranks first in the ASUN and No.36 in the NCAA East Region.  Akindele collected his third ASUN Freshman of the Week honor.


Hewing grabbed the ASUN Track Athlete of the Week Award for the first time in his career. He posted a career-best time of 22.12 to win the 200m and ran a leg on the Owls winning 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. His time of 21.27 in the 200m ranks No. 2 in the ASUN this season.


Julija Tarvide was named ASUN Field Athlete of the Week. The junior won the pole vault with a clearance of 1.76 (5'9.25") That mark leads the ASUN and ranks tied for 26th in the NCAA East Region this season. This is her second career ASUN Conference Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week award.


The Owls will return to action on May 10-11 at the ASUN Conference Championships at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
