BRASELTON, Ga. – The No. 37 Kennesaw State women's golf team led wire-to-wire and dominated the field at the 2019 ASUN Championship, capturing back-to-back conference titles on Tuesday at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan.
The win earned the Owls an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships and marked the program's fourth conference championship overall. KSU captured back-to-back titles for the first time in school history en route to a program-record three team wins in a season.
"The second round is what really sealed this championship for us," said head coach
Rhyll Brinsmead. "It was comfortable coming into today with a 19-shot lead and we went out and took care of business. This program has been built on recruiting quality student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom. For our three seniors to leave with two conference championships just speaks to the quality young ladies we have and the foundation they have helped build. For Medy, Roanne and Clara to go 1-2-3 in the conference championship just shows the depth we have and the dominance we have in the ASUN right now."
KSU recorded a 19-over par total of 311 to finish the tournament at 34-over par 911. KSU finished 13 shots clear of second-place Florida Gulf Coast.
Medy Thavong collected individual medalist honors, carding a 5-over par 78 in the final round after a 4-under 69 on Monday. She rolled in two birdies and 11 pars during the final round and her nine in three rounds led the field. Thavong finished at 4-over par 223 for the tournament. Thavong is the fourth Owl to win the ASUN Championship.
Roanne Tomlinson carded a 2-over par 78 on Tuesday to finish runner-up. The senior drained a long putt for eagle on the 17th hole and led the field in par-3 scoring for the championship, shooting even par. She concluded with a total of 7-over par 226.
Clara Aveling took hook home third place after a 4-over par 77 in the final round. The senior played her final 10 holes in even par. Her 37 total pars for the tournament were second most in the field. She finished at 8-over par 227.
Thavong, Tomlinson and Aveling landed on the All-Tournament team after taking the top three places individually.
Chloe Thornton finished 11th overall at 17-over par 236. The freshman rolled in a birdie from off the green to conclude her final round at 9-over 82.
Charlotte Charrayre closed her final round with six straight pars to finish the tournament with a 22-over par total of 241. The senior finished in a tie for 14th.
