BRASELTON, Ga. – The No. 37 Kennesaw State women's golf team overcame a slow start to grab the lead after the opening round of the 2019 ASUN Championship at the Par-73 The Legends Course at Chateau Elan.
The Owls carded a 17-over round of 309 on Sunday. KSU sits five shots clear of North Florida.
"What a day," Head Coach
Rhyll Brinsmead said. "This was one of those days on the course where we wanted to call a timeout. Unfortunately that is not an option, so we did our best to grind it out and stop the bleeding. Eric caught Chloe and I caught Roanne and we managed to calm them down. Super proud of Medy and Clara for being patient and grinding out their rounds to hold the lead. This was not our best today but it was enough to hold the lead. Excited to get some rest and get back out there tomorrow."
ASUN Player of the Year
Clara Aveling and
Medy Thavong paced the Owls on Sunday. Both shot 3-over par 76 and are tied for first overall. The two combined to roll in 21 pars and five birdies in their opening rounds.
Roanne Tomlinson recorded a 4-over par 77 and is tied for fourth. The senior's three birdies in round one are tied for the most in the field.
Chloe Thornton is tied for seventh after a 7-over par 80 in round one. After struggling on her opening nine holes the ASUN Freshmen of the Year settled down and shot even par over her final nine holes.
Charlotte Charrayre sits in 24
th after a 14-over par 87.
The Owls will tee off at 9:30 a.m. with FGCU and North Florida in round two of the ASUN Championship at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan.
