DELAND, Fla. – Hailey Andrews pitched a gem, getting run support from a solid outing by
Katie Greep, to help the Kennesaw State softball team shut out Stetson 2-0 Sunday afternoon and win the series.
Â
How it happened:Â The Owls (24-21, 9-6) looked to get going right out of the gates as
Hannah Thomason reached on an error before stealing second.
Christen Florence followed with a single down the right field line to put two on with no outs, but the Owls could not bring either of them around as Stetson (15-24, 4-8) closed out the inning.
Â
Neither team found a way to break through until the fifth inning, with
Kira Czyrklis logging the only hit between the first and fifth. Greep got KSU rolling with a lead-off single up the middle, moving to second off a sacrifice bunt from
Jessie Mullen. Thomason legged out a bunt on the next at-bat to put runners on the corners with one out, allowing Florence to strike a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Greep and put the Owls in front 1-0.
Â
Stetson looked to respond in the bottom of the inning as McLaughlin knocked a double to center field to break up Andrews no-hitter, but that would be as far as the Hatters would get as KSU closed out the inning.
Â
The Owls added an insurance run in the seventh inning as Dickey hit a lead-off single before stealing second base. Greep then stepped into the batters' box to smash an RBI double and give KSU a 2-0 lead. KSU held firm in the bottom of the inning to record the win.
Â
Andrews finished with five strikeouts over her seven innings of work, allowing only three hits.
