KENNESAW, Ga. – Former Kennesaw State baseball standout
Travis Bergen earned a spot on the San Francisco Giants opening-day roster manager Bruce Bochy announced today.
A 2015 seventh round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays, Bergen will be featured on the 25-man squad to begin 2019. The former Owl was outstanding in spring training, tossing 10.2 innings, yielding just two runs and five hits. He finished the spring with a 1.69 ERA while striking out ten batters and allowed just four walks.
Bergen was acquired by the San Francisco Giants in the 2018 Rule 5 draft from the Blue Jays. He competed for four seasons in the minor league system for Toronto. He accrued 1.27 ERA over 85.1 innings pitched and did not allow a run until his second year in the system.
The McDonough, Ga., native competed for three seasons in an Owl uniform and garnered spots on the 2015 First Team All-Conference, 2015 ASUN All-Academic Team and was a team captain his senior season.
He was an integral part of the 2014 squad that captured the program's first NCAA Regional win, as he was named the 2014 Tallahassee Regional Most Outstanding Player.
Bergen is the seventh player in Kennesaw State history to be featured on an MLB 25-man roster and is one of 68 players to be selected in the MLB draft or sign a major league contract.
The San Francisco Giants open up their season tomorrow (March 28) at the San Diego Padres. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m. eastern standard time.
