FORT MYERS, Fla.- Coming into the game as just one of two No. 7 seeded teams to ever make the ASUN Championship Semifinal game, the Owls fell 77-48 to Florida Gulf Coast.
Kennesaw State ends its season 9-22 overall, 4-12 in conference play but captured just the second win by a No. 7 seed in the ASUN tournament.
The Owls controlled the first four minutes of the game and forced FGCU into missing seven of it's first eight field goals which resulted in a 4-3 lead. Â The Owls continued the pressure the Eagles, as they were just 3-for-14 from the field through eight minutes of play. Kennesaw State took a 10-8 lead with just under three minutes after a basket from
Kamiyah Street. Florida Gulf Coast was able to capture the lead and was on top, 16-12, at the end of the opening frame.
Kennesaw State shrank the lead to just one point after two baskets from Street at the 6:23 mark. The Eagles got hot, and sank their next three shots and pushed the lead to 24-18 with 5:20 to play in the first half. The advantage ballooned to double digits after a 19-4 run from Florida Gulf Coast.
At the half, the Eagles claimed a 40-24 advantage. Street led the team with nine points, while
Amani Johnson logged two assists and
Carlotta Gianolla grabbed four rebounds.
KSU was forced to take a timeout at the 6:55 mark in the third quarter after a 7-0 run from the Eagles.
Peyton Lewis drained a corner 3-pointer to pull the Owls closer at the 3:38 tick, making the score 55-33 in favor of FGCU. It was her first trifecta since Jan. 29 at North Florida. The Eagles continued to stay hot from the field and went into the final frame with a 62-35 advantage.
Johnson netted eight points in the final frame of the contest, but the Owls could not overcome the early deficient and fell 77-48. Street ended with a team-high 19 points. Johnson led the team in rebounds and assists with eight and three, respectively.
