KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State's grit was on full display on Sunday afternoon, but the impressive effort came up short as the Owls fell to Georgia Tech, 63-47.
Â
"We really frustrated them early on for a great portion of the game," said Head Coach
Agnus Berenato. "We went through a couple scoring droughts and made some inexperienced decisions, which really hurt us. We will better with the more we play with each other, but overall, I could not be more proud of this team".
Â
The Owls defense was incredible early, as the Kennesaw State defenders allowed just seven points through the first quarter. All five positions for KSU were scrappy throughout the first half and stayed in passing lanes, forcing 10 Georgia Tech turnovers in the first half. Not only was Kennesaw State forcing turnovers, it was forcing the Yellow Jackets into tough shots. The KSU defense held Georgia Tech to 8-for-31 from the field in the first half.
Â
Kennesaw State held a six-point advantage at the end of the first frame, 13-7, which was the largest lead of the contest for the Owls. The Yellow Jackets fought to tie the game with 7:17 in the second quarter, but the Owls flexed their muscle and retook a 21-17 lead after a 3-pointer from
Gillian Piccolino. Georgia Tech ended the half on a 5-0 run and held a 22-21 advantage at the half.
Â
The teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter until the Yellow Jackets went on a 17-2 run and took a 42-30 lead at the 1:20 mark in the third frame. Once again, the Owls answered and found themselves down just 44-37 headed into the final quarter.
Â
Georgia Tech pushed out to a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter and Kennesaw State could not complete the comeback against the ACC foe.
Â
Four Owls ended in double digits with
Carlotta Gianolla ending with 13,
Alexis Poole with 11 and
Amani Johnson and
Gillian Piccolino ending with 10 a piece. Poole turned in her fifth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
Â
The Owls enjoy a break until Dec. 20 when KSU travels to Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pa.
