KENNESAW, Ga. – Despite
Alexis Poole's impressive performance of 23 points and 12 rebounds, Kennesaw State (5-14, 1-5) fell 71-60 to North Florida (8-11, 3-5) Tuesday (Jan. 29) afternoon.
KSU shot just 8.3 percent in the first quarter and could not ever gain the lead after falling behind in the opening frame.
The Owls offense started slow in the first quarter and fell behind, 11-0. After a bucket from Poole and two free throws from
Carlotta Gianolla, the Owls cut the lead to 11-4 with 2:33 in the first quarter. The Ospreys made a layup with under two minutes to play in the frame, and the quarter ended with North Florida on top 13-4.
Poole trimmed the lead to 13-6 after a move on the block at the 9:31 mark, but a 6-2 Osprey run forced a KSU timeout with 6:47 to play with North Florida on top, 19-8. With under four minutes to play in the first half,
Amani Johnson dished the ball to Poole, who was driving the lane, to cut the UNF lead to seven points.
Johnson made an impact scoring the ball late in the first half after netting back-to-back 3-pointers to compress the deficient to just two points, 24-22. The two teams went back-and-forth and ended the half with North Florida in the lead 29-24 at the break.
North Florida began the second half on an 8-4 run to go up 39-28, but a corner 3-pointer from
Peyton Lewis stopped the run and cut the lead to eight points, 39-31, at the media timeout. Poole made her presence known midway through the third quarter for the Owls after netting eight points and three rebounds in the third frame.
Two early 3-pointers from the visitors forced Kennesaw State to take a timeout down 56-45 with 8:31 to play in the game. The Ospreys extended the lead to 17 in the final quarter and the Owls could not recover and fell 71-60.
