ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Senior Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres carded a 2-under par 70 to lead the Kennesaw State men's golf team during day one of the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate that began Friday at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.

The Owls also received under par rounds from seniors Jake Fendt and Wyatt Larkin, who both posted 1-under par rounds of 71 to lead Kennesaw State to an even-par 288 total and in a tie for fourth place after 18 holes at the par-72, 7,178-yard course.

The strong first-round showing came in an event that includes 12 teams which finished the 2017-18 season in Golfstat's Top 50 final rankings.

Tennessee opened with an 8-under par 280 and holds a one-shot advantage over No. 9 Georgia Tech (281, -7). The Owls are tied with No. 11 Alabama, while No. 14 Clemson (290, +2) rounds out the top five.

"Today's round was a great start to the year and byproduct of the focused work everyone has put has in over the last few weeks," head coach Bryant Odom said. "Although the weather and playing conditions are perfect for scoring, the greens at The Farm are arguably the fastest we play all year.

"Our game plan for the event is all about how we target lines into the greens, using the proper speed for each for putt," Odom added. "If we can continue this discipline and execute the shots as needed, we can continue to have results like we had today.  We also have a comfort level on this course that helps us and we will try and use that to our advantage as the tournament continues."

Starting its round on the 10th hole, Kennesaw State played the back nine at 3-under par before posting a 3-over total on the more difficult front nine.

Torres began his round shooting an even-par 36 on his first nine before closing with a bogey-free 2-under par 34. He is currently tied for sixth, two shots behind Alabama's Davis Riley, who shot a 4-under 68 and holds a one-shot lead over four players.

Fendt and Larkin are both tied for eighth, while junior Connor Coffee (76, +4) is tied for 49th, and redshirt freshman Grant Sutliff, who made his collegiate debut, is tied for 67th after posting a 6-over 78.

The Carpet Capital Collegiate continues Saturday with Kennesaw State scheduled to tee off at 8:45 a.m. and is grouped with Clemson and Auburn. All the action can be followed live at www.golfstatresults.com.
