Opening Tee
The Kennesaw State men's golf team continues its fall schedule this week when it travels to Alabama to compete in the Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by UAB and Graeme McDowell at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Shoal Creek.
 
The 54-hole tournament opens Monday (Sept. 24) with 36 holes and concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes at the par-72, 7,300-yard layout. The Owls are grouped with Liberty and North Florida and will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 8:20 p.m. (ET).

The Shoal Creek Invitational marks the second of five fall tournaments for the Owls, who opened their 2018-19 season at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. Sept. 7-9.

The Field
The field for the Shoal Creek Invitational includes host UAB, Georgia Southern, High Point, Kansas, Kennesaw State, Louisiana Tech, Liberty, Lipscomb, North Florida, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. Five of the 14 teams competing this week – Texas A&M (3), Vanderbilt (4), Ole Miss (32), Kansas (38) and Liberty (42) concluded the 2017-18 season ranked in Golfstat's Top 50. Kennesaw State completed the season No. 59.

"Everyone is ready for our next event and excited to play Shoal Creek again. It is a major championship golf course and the field is stacked with highly ranked programs. Our focus the last couple weeks have been on the takeaways from the Carpet Capital Collegiate and we are now looking ahead to some competitive play beginning Monday."   

Kennesaw State at the Shoal Creek Invitational
The Owls are appearing in the Shoal Creek Invitational for the third time. KSU competed in the event in 2012 and 2017 and finished eighth both times. Led by junior Jake Fendt, Kennesaw State carded an 11-over par 875 total a year ago. Wake Forest captured the team title with a 15-under par score of 849 to finish 13 shots ahead of Liberty (862, -2). Fendt tied for seventh place following a 3-under par 213 total to finish six strokes behind individual medalist Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss.
 
Carpet Capital Collegiate Recap
Kennesaw State opened its 2018-19 season with a 12th place showing at the Carpet Capital Collegiate two weeks ago. The Owls produced rounds of 288-300-298 to finish at 22-over par 886. Tennessee and Georgia Tech completed 54 holes tied for first place at -21 under par 843 before the Volunteers won a playoff to claim the team title. Senior Jake Fendt led the Owls, tying for 22nd at 1-over par 217. Clemson's Bryson Nimmer totaled a 10-under par 206 to capture individual medalist honors, finishing one shot ahead of two players.
 
Kennesaw State Men's Golf
The Kennesaw State men's golf program has established itself at the national level in recent years as it has made eight consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and advanced to the NCAA Championships on three occasions. The Owls finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 59 by Golfstat and No. 62 by Golfweek.
 
Summer Highlights
Several members of the Kennesaw State golf had successful summers, highlighted by rising redshirt freshman Grant Sutliff qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship that was held at Spyglass Hills Golf Course and Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif. The following is a rundown of the Owls' summer tournaments.

The 2018-19 Roster
Fourth-year head coach Bryant Odom welcomes back a veteran team in 2018-19 that includes all five players who competed in last year's NCAA Stockton Regional. The KSU roster includes four juniors (Wyatt Larkin, Jake Fendt, Adam Morris, Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres), junior Connor Coffee, sophomore Brady Keran and four freshmen (Rob Howard, Justin Kim, Conner Rostowsky and Grant Sutliff).
 
2017-18 Season in Review
The Owls' solid play continued during the 2017-18 campaign as Kennesaw State posted 10 top 10 and eight top five showings and advanced to the NCAA Stockton Regional. KSU posted runner-up finishes at the Pinetree Intercollegiate, Steelwood Intercollegiate and Southern Intercollegiate.

Junior Jake Fendt led the Owls, posting a 72.39 scoring average, and team-high nine top 20 and five top 10 showings. Redshirt junior Wyatt Larkin (72.52) and junior Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres (72.91) also recorded sub-73 scoring averages.

2018 Season Honors
Junior Jake Fendt earned ASUN Conference first team all-conference honors, while fellow juniors Wyatt Larkin and Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres was selected to the second team. All three players were tabbed Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, while Fendt was named to the ASUN All-Academic Team. Brady Keran was voted to the ASUN All-Freshman. Kennesaw State also was recognized with the 18Birdies GCAA Academic Team Award, achieving President's Recognition Status).
 
Next Up
The Owls will have a two-week break before returning to action at The Franklin American Mortgage Collegiate at The Grove. The tournament opens Oct. 7 at The Grove Golf Club in College Grove, Tenn.
