MALIBU, Calif. – Fermin Calvo Barcelo picked up a historic win at the Oracle ITA Masters on Thursday.

"Fermin competed fantastically well today against a talented player," assistant coach Simon Pritchard said. "After a really close first set, I was impressed with how Fermin used the momentum to get ahead early in the second and finish it off strong."

Calvo Barcelo collected a 7-5, 6-0 win over Majed Kilani of Tulsa. His win marked the first by an Owl at an ITA National Championship in program history. He advances to Fridays round of 16 against the No.1 seed Yuya Ito of the University of Texas.

"I felt today was one of those matches where my passion and hard work about this sport helped me go through," Calvo Barcelo said. "After a slow start, I was able to keep pushing, and that's what makes me feel good about my game. Hopefully I can keep that up tomorrow against another talented player."
