KENNESAW, Ga. – Coming off the best season in program history, 12th-year Kennesaw State women's golf head coach
Rhyll Brinsmead is set on taking the Owls to new heights during the 2018-19 season.
"Scheduling is one of the most important aspects of a successful program. The way our rankings are determined weighs heavily on a strong schedule and quality golf," Brinsmead said. "This year our schedule is the best we will play in my 12 years at KSU, and this schedule was earned by the team based on last year's historic season."
Kennesaw State commences the season September 21-23, with a trip to Greenville, S.C., for its sixth-straight appearance at the Lady Paladin Invitational (Furman).
After a two-week break, the Owls resume their fall slate with three October tournaments. KSU will head to Medinah, Illinois for the Illini Women's Invitational hosted by the University of Illinois at Medinah October 8-9, then travels to West Point, Mississippi for the Magnolia Invitational October 14-16. The fall schedule concludes with the Alexa Stirling Women's Invitational hosted by Louisville October 26-28.
"We will again start the year in late September at Furman's event," Brinsmead said. "We purposefully pushed our start of fall season back a few weeks last year to allow more time to prepare and I believe this was instrumental to our success. We love this golf course and know it well, so I am excited to kick the year off here again. After this event, we will play two new tournaments. Illinois is hosting at Medinah C.C. home of the 2012 Ryder Cup. This will be an amazing experience for the team!! We then travel to Old Waverly, home of the 1999 Women' U.S Open. This event is co-hosted by Mississippi State & Ole Miss and will feature a strong SEC field. We will close out the fall at the Atlanta Athletic Club, hosted by Louisville. This is an event we won last year and obviously have great memories from."
The spring schedule opens with the Owls traveling to Orlando, Florida for the UCF Challenge February 3-5 before returning to Florida for the Moon Golf Invitational hosted by Louisville in Melbourne, February 18-19.
"The spring will launch in early February at one of the best spring events in the nation, the UCF Challenge," Brinsmead said. "This field is very deep and it's crucial to post a good finish here, to start momentum for your spring season. We return to Florida for our second year at the Moon Golf Invitational and will look to redeem our play from this event last year. The team loves the trip to Mexico, and this year the event will be played over three days and feature a field that includes reigning NCAA champions, Arizona. The spring will round out with the Brickyard event, and an invite back from UGA to the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Liz Murphey is by far the best event in the nation in April, and we are so grateful to Coach Brewer for inviting us back again."
Kennesaw State's lone tournament in March will take place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico when it takes part in the Hawkeye El-Tigre Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa on March 21-23.
KSU will wrap up the regular season with a pair of April tournaments. The Owls return to the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Georgia April 8-9 before traveling to Athens for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic April 11-13.
Kennesaw State will set its sights on a second consecutive conference title when it competes at the ASUN Conference Championships April 21-23 in Braselton, Georgia.
"We are set on winning back to back ASUN Championships, we will play the Legends course at Chateau Elan," Brinsmead said. A course we now know well. This is a squad that knows how to win and has a passion for competing. A return to NCAA postseason is not a want for this team, it is a given and we have our eyes set on advancing out of NCAA regional play. With the entire squad returning except Henriette from last year's nationally ranked squad, and the addition of a highly touted freshman, I am anticipating another record-setting year!"
Auburn, Washington, Michigan State and Oklahoma will host NCAA Regionals May 6-8. The University of Arkansas will host the NCAA Championships May 17-23 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Owls finished the 2017-18 season with nine top-five team finishes, including two victories and ranked No.48 nationally.
