NORMAN, Okla. – The Kennesaw State men's golf team was acknowledged for its commitment in the classroom as it was one of 222 collegiate programs to earn the 18Birdies Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Academic Team Award and among a group of 48 teams to earn President's Special Recognition status for the 2017-18 academic year, the organization announced on Friday (July 20).
Â
The honor marks the eighth straight year that the Owls have been recognized for their academic success and third time under head coachÂ
Bryant Odom. Â To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year and have a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Â
President's Special Recognition status is awarded to programs that post a 3.5 GPA or higher. The Owls recorded a 3.58 GPA, marking their best performance since posting a 3.66 GPA during the 2012-13 academic year.
Â
"I am extremely pleased and excited for each member of the team as they have shown the same dedication, commitment and competitiveness in the classroom as they show on the course," Odom said. "We have established a culture and expectation to not only be successful in golf but to also achieve high academic success, and this recognition is a result of their hard work in their studies and the support they have received from Dr.Â
Randy Kennedy and his staff in the Student-Athlete Success Services Department.
Â
"To earn President's Special Recognition status is even more impressive considering there were only 24 NCAA Division I programs that recorded a 3.5 GPA or higher," Odom added. "I could not be prouder of our student-athletes and want to congratulate each one of them for the effort they put forward in the classroom." Â
Â
Kennesaw State has received the GCAA All-Academic Team Award every year since 2011.
