Des Moines, Iowa –
Solomon Simmons finished second in the decathlon at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.
"It's pretty awesome what Solomon was able to accomplish here," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Andy Eggerth said. "To already be an elite athlete and break the 8000 point barrier in his first year with this training program is great to see and there's a lot more in the tank. To give an idea of the accomplishment, over 3000 people have climbed Mount Everest, over 1400 men have broken the four-minute mile, but Solomon is only the 81st American to surpass 8000 points in the decathlon."
Simmons concluded the event scoring 8019 points. Zach Ziemek won the event with 8294 points.
Simmons started the day with a time of 14.32 seconds in the 100m hurdles, which was good second overall.
He would also grab second in the discus throw with a launch of 45.78m (150'2).
In the pole vault, he would clear 4.65m (15'3) to finish 10
th overall.
He would land a throw of 60.94m (199'11) in the javelin to finish second.
In the final event of the decathlon, Simmons posted a time of 4:44.54 in the 1500, which was good for ninth place.
