Solomon Simmons is in second place after day one of the decathlon at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.
"Solomon had a very strong day one," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Andy Eggerth said. "He's sitting in second place and is 44 points ahead of his pace at Texas Relays so he's poised to break the 8000 point barrier and medal tomorrow."
Simmons finished with 4094 points on day one. Zach Ziemek leads the event with 4169 points.
He opened the meet with a time of 10.67 seconds in the 100m, which was good second overall.
He won the long jump with a leap of 7.25m (23' 9½") and the shot put with a toss of 14.30m (46' 11").
In the high jump, he would grab a 12th place finish with a clearance of 1.87m (6'1½").
In the final event of the day, he ran a time of 49.22 seconds in the 400m good for 12
thoverall.
Simmons will conclude the decathlon at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University on Friday, June 22 at 12:30 p.m. ET. Former Owl Jocselyn Powell will compete in the first round of the 100m hurdles at 4:00 p.m. ET.
