KENNESAW, Ga. –  Kennesaw State junior Maddie Roth added another honor to her growing list of accolades as she was named third team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), it was announced on Wednesday (May 30). She was one of 54 student-athletes from 35 different institutions named to one of three All-American teams.

Roth, who was selected as a designated player, becomes the first KSU player to earn NCAA Division I All-American recognition since the program made the transition in 2006. A total of 34 Owls garnered NCAA Division II All-American honors from 1995-2005.

"This is an historic accomplishment for Maddie and the KSU softball program," head coach Pete D'Amour said. "Being an All-American means you've been recognized as one of the best softball players in the country, and it is a prestigious award.

"To be the first KSU softball player to earn their way onto an NCAA Division I All-American team is quite a milestone," D'Amour added. "I am very proud of Maddie and she is well deserving of the honor."

Roth, a native of Yorba Linda, Calif., had an outstanding season, earning NFCA First Team All-South Region and ASUN Second Team All-Conference honors. The highlight of her season came in the semifinals of the ASUN Championship when she delivered a three-run walk-off home run to lift the Owls to a 4-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast. KSU went on to defeat USC Upstate in the championship game to record its first tournament title and earn the program's initial NCAA Division I Softball Championship appearance.

Roth led the Owls with 14 doubles, finished second with a .377 average, .623 slugging percentage, .435 on-base percentage, tied for second with eight home runs and was third with 36 RBIs. She ranked third in the ASUN in slugging percentage, fourth in batting average, RBIs, tied for fourth in home runs and doubles, tied for fifth in hits (57) and was eighth in on-base percentage.

Kennesaw State finished the 2018 season with a 39-17 record that concluded with an appearance in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
