ASUN Release

KENNESAW, Ga. - The women's track and field team collected a pair of postseason awards after winning their second consecutive ASUN Outdoor Championship over the weekend the conference announced Friday. Director of Track and Field Andy Eggerth was awarded ASUN Coach of the Year for the sixth consecutive year while Aliyah Whisby was named the Most Outstanding Field Athlete for her strong performance at the conference championship.

Eggerth guided the women to their second consecutive ASUN Outdoor Championship victory. His women's team scored 261 points in the two-day meet. Those 261 points were tied for the second most scored by any Division I women's outdoor conference championship winning team in 2018.

"It's a huge honor to receive Coach of the Year recognition, so I'm thankful to my colleagues for voting for me," Eggerth said. "I work tirelessly to achieve the highest level of success possible for our programs, but I'm not foolish enough to think it's all about me.  Our success is predicated upon the work our student-athletes and staff put in, and the resources the athletic department provide us to be successful; so this award really goes to Kennesaw State University."

Whisby led all women scoring 30 points at the ASUN Championships. The redshirt-freshman won the heptathlon scoring 5028 points.  In the heptathlon, she set the conference record in the high jump with a clearance of 1.75m (5'8.75"). In the open events, she picked up a gold medal in the high jump clearing 1.69m (1.69m   5' 6.5") and a silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 5.82m (1.4) (19'1.25"). She closed out the event finishing fifth in the javelin with a toss of 31.39m  (103'0").

"I'm very happy for Aliyah," Eggerth said "She struggled through redshirting her freshman year due to injury so it's nice for her to enjoy some success to throw a little fuel on her motivation. Aliyah is just an infant in her techniques and understanding of her events, but she has the talent of a giant so I can't wait to see what she does at the NCAA Championships, but more so several years from now."

Whisby and 10 other Owls will get the opportunity to compete in the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championships. The preliminary rounds are May 24-26 at the University of South Florida for the NCAA East Region.
