Men's Release
KENNESAW, Ga. - The men's track and field team collected a duo of postseason awards after winning their sixth straight ASUN Outdoor Championship over the weekend the conference announced Friday. Director of Track and Field
Andy Eggerth was named ASUN Coach of the Year for the sixth consecutive year while
Paris Williams was awarded the Most Outstanding Field Athlete for his strong performance at the conference championship.
Eggerth led the men to their sixth consecutive ASUN Outdoor Championship victory. His men's team scored 277 points in the two-day meet. Those 277 points were the third most scored by any Division I men's outdoor conference championship winning team in 2018.
"It's a huge honor to receive Coach of the Year recognition, so I'm thankful to my colleagues for voting for me," Eggerth said. "I work tirelessly to achieve the highest level of success possible for our programs, but I'm not foolish enough to think it's all about me. Our success is predicated upon the work our student-athletes and staff put in, and the resources the athletic department provide us to be successful; so this award really goes to Kennesaw State University."
Williams led all men scoring 36 points at the ASUN Championships. The sophomore won the decathlon scoring a personal-best 7236 points. He became the first athlete in conference history to win all 10 events in the decathlon. In the decathlon, he set the school and conference record in the discus with a toss of 42.86m (140'7"). He picked up a trio of bronze medals in the high jump clearing 1.87m (6'1.5"), the long jump with a leap of 7.00m (1.9) (22'11.75") and the javelin with a toss of 50.47m (165'7").
"Paris was a diamond in the rough," Eggerth said. His high school marks did not warrant scholarship, but he has put in a lot of work and become one of the best in the conference, and one of the better athletes in the nation just shy of going to NCAA's in the decathlon but he will be going in the 110m hurdles. He is one that will be an All-American when he decides he wants it."
Williams and 10 other Owls will get the opportunity to compete in the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championships. The preliminary rounds are May 24-26 at the University of South Florida for the NCAA East Region.
