MACON, Ga.- Led by
Madison Caldwell, the Kennesaw State women's golf team sits in fifth place after the opening round of the Brickyard Collegiate at the Brickyard Golf Course.
The team posted a 17-over par 305 in the opening round. KSU is just 11 shots behind No.20 Vanderbilt who leads the 15-team field after a 6-over par 294 in the first round.
Caldwell recorded an even-par 72 to grab a share of the lead with Mercer's Payton Schanen and Vanderbilt's Louise Yu after the opening round. The junior rolled in a tournament-best 16 pars on Sunday. Her round of 72 was her eighth at par or better this season.
"We walked off the course extremely frustrated today knowing we let this round get away from us over the finishing holes," head coach
Rhyll Brinsmead said. "It was tough out there today, as the overall scores show. The course is tough, conditions cold and the team grinded all day to make pars and some great birdies. This team is special. They have high expectation every time they tee it up in competition. We told them after the round, today is ok but tomorrow will be great....with better decision making and putting we will be fine. Props to Madison for a really great round and earning the individual lead."
Henriette Nielsen made three birdies and 10 pars on the way to a 3-over par 75. The senior is tied for 15
th.
Medy Thavong carded a 6-over par 78 in her opening round. The junior is tied for 34
th.
Clara Aveling and
Roanne Tomlinson are tied for 52
nd after each recorded rounds of 8-over par 80.
Playing as an individual,
Charlotte Charrayre posted a 3-over par 75 to join Nielsen in a tie for 15
th.
Round two of the Brickyard Intercollegiate will take place on Monday (Apr.8) at the Brickyard Golf Course. Tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. off the first and tenth tees.
