KENNESAW, Ga. – Four Kennesaw State men's tennis players earn ASUN All-Conference honors, it was announced by the conference office on Thursday (April 19).
Junior Fermin Calvo Barcelo became the first player in program history to collect the ASUN Player of the Year award. The junior posted a 14-4 record for the Owls at No.1 singles position. After getting off to a 1-4 start, the junior has won thirteen consecutive matches dropping just three sets during that streak. The Mar del Plata, Argentina native was 6-0 in ASUN singles action. He had nine wins in doubles action paired with Lucas De Torres Curth and
Manuel Castellanos. He also was a unanimous selection to the ASUN All-Conference First Team.
"I'm extremely happy for Fermin to win such a prestigious award," Director of Tennis Eduardo Rincon said. "He has been working on every single area of his game and it's only fitting he gets recognized. I know this award means a lot to him personally as the ASUN is always very competitive in Men's Tennis, especially at the top position."
Bryan Triana was named to the ASUN All-Freshman team. Triana was 11-7 in singles action primarily out of the No.4 position. He won six of his final 10 singles matches and was 3-3 in ASUN play. The Miami native, teamed with
Drew Lahey and the duo was 11-4 in doubles action. They were 3-2 against the ASUN and 7-3 over their final 10 matches between No.2 and No.3 doubles.
"Bryan joins a distinguished group of freshman from the ASUN this year," Rincon said. "This is a great honor for him that will help motivate him to achieve more in the coming years."
Lucas de Torres Curth and
Corey Smith were named to the ASUN All-Academic team.
Torres Curth has a 3.92 GPA while majoring in International Business. The junior had a 9-8 record in singles action at No.2. The junior got on a roll late winning his final two ASUN singles matches. The San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina native won a total of eight doubles matches with
Fermin Calvo Barcelo and
Corey Smith.
"Lucas is a great student athlete and being recognized will mean a lot to him," Rincon stated. "He works extremely hard and takes his academics very seriously."
Smith carries a 3.81 GPA in Economics. The senior was 9-8 in singles action at No.3 this season. The Cochran, Ga. Native added seven wins in doubles with five different partners.
"Corey has brought great leadership to this team this year and I think his results and GPA speak for themselves," Rincon said. "I am proud to have coached him. We will miss him dearly and I look forward to following his career path after he graduates."
Kennesaw State will be back in action on Friday when it takes on Lipscomb in the ASUN Conference Championships on the campus of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. (ET).
