ATHENS, Ga.- The No.45 Kennesaw State women's golf team sits in eighth place in a strong field after the opening 36 holes of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course on Friday.

The Owls posted rounds of 297-296 for a two-round total of 17-over par 593. KSU is ahead of three programs that are ranked in the top 50 this week including No.11 Florida and No.37 Ole Miss. No.2 Alabama leads the 12-team field with a 14-under par total of 562.

"What an awesome day on the course," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "In my 11 years at Kennesaw State, I have never seen a more difficult course to walk for 36 holes. I am so proud of how the team handled 12 straight hours on the golf course and played some impeccable golf. Rounds of 297 and 296 in this field on this course is truly a testament to the talent of this team. I have been saying all year just how good they are, and now they are proving it. This field is like a national championship and to find ourselves in the middle of the pack is so exciting as it reflects the direction this program is headed."

Henriette Nielsen and Medy Thavong led the way for the Owls on Friday. Both fired rounds of 75-72 for a 3-over par total of 147 to be tied for 20th. Thavong had five birdies while Nielsen rolled in 21 pars during the first 36 holes.

Reigning ASUN Golfer of the Week, Madison Caldwell is tied for 30th at 6-over par 150. The junior recorded rounds of 2-over par 74 and 4-over par 76.

Charlotte Charrayre posted the Owls lowest score in the first round at 1-over par 73. She is in 41st at 9-over par 153.

Clara Aveling is in 47th with a two-round total of 12-over par 156.

The final round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic will take place on Saturday (Apr.14) at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Owls will be paired with Louisville and Ole Miss and will tee off on the tenth tee beginning at 8:35 a.m.
