ASUN Women's Release
KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State's
De'Von Johnson and
Jocselyn Powell and
Paris Williams collected ASUN Women's and Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week Honors the conference announced on Wednesday.
Johnson earned ASUN Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after winning the long jump at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. She won the event after landing a new outdoor school record jump of 6.35m (20'10). That jump ranks first in the ASUN by a foot and a half and is tied eighth nationally this season. This is her second career ASUN Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honor.
"We had some really amazing performances this weekend," director of track and field and cross country
Andy Eggerth said. "I don't even know where De'Von pulled that performance out of. I expected she'd jump around 6.20m, but to have two jumps over 6.30m is really impressive. Coach Agne (Eggerth) is doing a great job helping De'Von develop and it's really fun to watch De'Von have a great senior year after the injury struggles she's battled through the last couple years."
Powell collected the ASUN Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor. She was the top collegiate in the 100m hurdles at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in a time of 13.15 seconds. That time leads the ASUN by one second and is 15
th nationally. This is her second ASUN Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Honor.
"Coach (Josh) Campbell continues to have Jocselyn surprise even herself," Eggerth said. "After nearly a full second PR in the 400m hurdles at the Texas relays last weekend it was outstanding seeing Jocelyn run 13.15 in the 100m hurdles this weekend. She is running elite times at a world level so we're looking forward to big things as we get closer to the championship portion of the season and she moves into the professional ranks after the NCAA Championships."
Williams won both ASUN Field Athlete of the Week honors after his strong performance in the decathlon at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. He won the decathlon scoring a personal-best 7175 points. That mark ranks first in the ASUN and 14
th nationally. He would set a school record in the decathlon javelin throw with a toss of 51.27m (168'2") which ranks second in the ASUN this season. Also landed a jump of 7.06m (23'2) in the decathlon the long jump that ranks third in the ASUN this season. This is his first ASUN Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week Honor.
"Paris is just scratching the surface of his abilities as a decathlete," Eggerth said. "Elite decathletes peak around 28 years of age, so to score nearly 7200 points as a sophomore in only his second year doing the decathlon indicates to me that he's capable of being an 8000 point guy. There are certainly weaknesses in his repertoire, but as his hunger grows because he realizes how good he can become he'll really blossom ."
The Owls will take this weekend off and will compete at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia on April 20-21.
