OPELIKA, Ala. – Behind a career-best round from junior
Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres, the Kennesaw State men's golf team fired a 4-under par 284 and is in second place after 18 holes of the Tiger Invitational that opened Sunday at the par-72, 7,149-yard Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala.
The Owls are three shots behind host and No. 9 Auburn, which posted a 7-under par 281 total to lead the 17-team field.
After making the turn at 2-under par, Torres posted a bogey-free back nine that included four birdies to finish at 6-under par 66 and assume the first-round lead. He holds a one-shot lead over Maryland's David Kocher (67, -5). The KSU junior's previous best career round on a par-72 was a 67 at the 2016 Steelwood Intercollegiate.
"Today's round was a team effort and the result of some hard work over the last few weeks, and everyone stuck to their game plan and executed very well," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "We had a healthy start to the round and collectively improved towards the finish. With the exception of a few stumbles coming in, we finished strong and are in position near the top of the leaderboard.
"Pablo played a wonderful round and took the outright lead for the day with birdies on the final two holes," Odom added. "Tomorrow we will look to make a run at first place."
Junior
Jake Fendt contributed a 2-under par 70 and is tied for seventh. Fellow juniors
Wyatt Larkin (73) and
Adam Morris (75) are tied for 22nd and 40th, respectively. Freshman
Brady Keran shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 64th.
The Tiger Invitational continues on Monday with the Owls grouped with Auburn and Mississippi State, and scheduled to tee off at 10:30 a.m. (ET). All the action can be followed live at
