KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team gained a split of a non-conference doubleheader versus Liberty Wednesday at Bailey Park.
Â
Behind the stellar pitching of senior
Abigail Green, the Owls (18-10) posted an 8-0, six-inning victory in the opener before falling, 7-1, to the Flames (22-8) in the nightcap.
Â
After allowing a leadoff single to open the game, Green (7-4), retired 18 of the next 19 batters she faced. The lone batter to reach base after the first inning came in the fifth inning when Green issued a two-out walk that snapped a streak of 14 consecutive batters retired. She also totaled seven strikeouts.
Â
Noelle Winkles,
Maddie Roth and
Alexa Solorzano had two hits apiece to highlight a 10-hit attack. Winkles had three RBIs, while Solorzano and
Meredith Milam scored two runs each.
Â
The Owls provided Green with all the runs she would need in the fourth inning as they scored four runs on four hits. Solorzano started the rally with a leadoff single as the first four batters reached base and eventually scored.
Â
Jessie Mullen had an RBI double,
Lauren Bennett reached on a fielder's choice that produced a run, and Winkles capped the inning with a two-run single.
Â
Kennesaw State took advantage of three hits and a Liberty error to score four runs in the sixth inning.
Kira Czyrklis opened the frame with a double and
Olivia Tamewitz ended the game with a two-run single that gave the Owls an 8-0 win.
Â
Kennesaw State was held to just three hits and committed four errors in game two.
Â
Liberty's Amber Bishop homered off
Alley Cutting in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead and the Flames scored twice in the fifth inning to build a 3-0 advantage. KSU answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth before the Liberty added a run in the sixth and scored three times in the seventh.
Â
Roth continued her hot hitting of late, as she had two of the Owls' three hits and finished the day with four hits in six at-bats.
