KENNESAW, Ga.- Kennesaw State's
Qwazon Al-Khaliq and
Erica Sergeant earned ASUN Conference Outdoor Track and Field weekly awards following their performances at the Yellow Jacket Invitational the conference announced Wednesday.
Al-Khaliq was named ASUN Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. The sophomore finished third in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 15.25m (0.5) (50'0.5"). That jump ranks first in the ASUN by almost three feet and ranks eighth in the NCAA. He finished sixth in the long jump with a career-best mark of 6.84m (-0.7) (22' 5.25"). That jump ranks second in the ASUN this season.
"I'm very pleased for Qwazon and his personal record in the triple jump," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Andy Eggerth said. "Jumping is his passion and he and Coach
Ed Loyd have been working hard to get Qwazon over the 50 foot barrier. It's great to see that finally happen, and knowing there's more in the tank for Qwazon to jump even further."
Sergeant was tabbed ASUN Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the fourth time in her career. She won the pole vault after clearing 4.05m (13'3.5"). That vault set a new school record and is tops in the ASUN by nearly a foot and a half this season and ranks third in the NCAA this season. That vault by Sergeant should be good enough to qualify her for the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships.
"Erica has been working very hard this year and been very coachable. We're still working on some technical components to make her even better, but it sure is good to see her open her outdoor season in less than optimal conditions with an NCAA qualifying mark and school record," Eggerth said.
The Owls will return to action Thursday-Saturday, March 22-24 at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
