EATONTON, Ga. – Led by juniors
Wyatt Larkin and
Jake Fendt, the Kennesaw State men's golf team carded a final-round 5-under par 283 to finish eighth at the 16-team Linger Longer Invitational that concluded Tuesday at the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
The Owls shot the second-lowest round of the day as they moved up three places in the standings, following the second round, to finish the 54-hole event with a 7-over par 871 total. Eighth-ranked Alabama captured the team title, posting a 24-under par score of 840 to finish two shots ahead of second-place Georgia (842, -22).
"The team really showed its resilient nature today after yesterday's round. The guys came out with a positive attitude and fresh mindset of attacking the course," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "We started strong and the wind picked up in the afternoon, and we were able to move up the leaderboard."
Larkin, whose 5-under par 67 equaled his career-low 18 hole score and tied for the day's low round, finished the tournament with a 5-under par 211 to tie for sixth. The Owls' junior opened with a solid opening nine, posting four straight birdies to begin his day. After making the turn at 5-under, Larkin got to six-under par through 15 holes, before bogeying 16 and finishing with a career-best tying round.
Fendt also recorded a solid round, signing a 4-under par 68 scorecard to finish at 3-under par 213 and tie for 10th. He posted seven birdies and had three bogeys on the day.
Alabama's Lee Hodges claimed individual medalist honors, recording a 14-under par 202 total, to finish two shots ahead of Georgia's Spencer Ralston (204, -12).
"Wyatt and Jake led the way and played themselves into top 10 finishes in an extremely strong field of ranked players," Odom said. "We now have some time off before competing in the 3M Augusta Invitational, which will feature the strongest field we will see all year."
