KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team opened its 2018 home schedule on Friday, but errors proved costly as they Owls dropped a doubleheader to Rutgers during the opening day of the Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament at Bailey Park.
Â
Kennesaw State (2-5) fell 4-3 in eight innings in the opener before suffering a 7-0 setback to the Scarlet Knights (5-6) in the nightcap.
Â
Behind a solid outing by sophomore
Alley Cutting (0-2), the Owls took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but an error opened the door for a two-out single that tied the game and forced extra innings.
Â
Rutgers used a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead, and Kennesaw State got the tying run to third base with two outs in the bottom half of the frame, but was unable to come up with the clutch hit.
Â
Sophomore
Olivia Tamewitz led the Owls with three hits, a run scored and RBI, while Cutting scattered seven hits, allowed four runs (one earned), walked two and struck out two.
Â
In the nightcap, Kennesaw State and Rutgers were in a scoreless tie until the third inning when the Scarlet Knights took advantage of three Owl errors to score five runs, with only one run being earned.
Â
Offensively, freshman
Meredith Milam had three of KSU's four hits, while junior
Hannah Thomason contributed a sixth-inning single.
Â
With rain in the forecast for Sunday, Saturday's schedule has been adjusted. Kennesaw State will host Florida A&M at 10 a.m. and come back later in the day to host Morehead State at 5 p.m.
