JACKSONVILLE, Ala.– The Kennesaw State women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought  non-conference match at Jacksonville State, 5-2, Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts in Jacksonville, Alabama.

Senior Alexandra Mercado and Kennedy Craig were victorious in their singles matches to provide the two points for the Owls, but it was not enough against the Gamecocks. Mercado and Laura Hopton won their doubles match.

The Gamecocks (7-0) remained unbeaten in non-conference play by winning the doubles point, and claiming three singles matches at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 to clinch the victory.

"This was one of those matches that got away from us," said Assistant Head Coach Miranda Foley. "We were a point or two from putting ourselves in a position to get team win but fell short mentally when we really needed it to count. Alexandra had a solid day overall. She and Laura did a god job in doubles giving us a win moving into singles and I was really encouraged by her performance in singles. Finishing the match with a singles win from Kennedy was also a plus. We are looking forward now to another two tough matches on the road."

Mercado and Laura Hopton knocked off Genevie Ulanday and Elena Tendero at No.1 doubles.
 
At No. 1 singles, Mercado won in straight sets over Genevie Ulanday, 6-2, 6-3.
 
Craig pulled out a back-and-fourth three-setter over Alessia Locati, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
 
The Owls return to action Friday (Feb.23) at Presbyterian. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
