KENNESAW, Ga. – A slow start proved too difficult a challenge to overcome as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team fell, 67-49, to visiting Jacksonville Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.
Â
It proved to be a day for the freshmen as
Kamiyah Street led the Owls (7-14, 3-7) with 13 points and six assists, while
Janae Omusi established career-highs with nine points and six rebounds. Rookies
Breanna Hoover and
Alexis Poole added seven points apiece. Poole also had a team-high tying six rebounds.
Â
STORYLINE
An aggressive, quick Jacksonville defense, ranked No. 1 in the ASUN Conference in scoring defense, was problematic for Kennesaw State as it was held to just five first-half field goals and committed 17 turnovers. The Owls were limited to four field goals in the first quarter, and a three-pointer by
Clara Young with 2:12 remaining in the first half, represented KSU's lone field goal in the second quarter.
Â
After falling behind 16-0 to begin the game, Kennesaw State closed the first quarter with an 11-2 run to trail 18-11 after 10 minutes. The Dolphins led 37-20 at halftime.
Â
Kennesaw State turned things around in the second half, outscoring Jacksonville (18-7, 8-2) 19-15 in the third quarter and 30-29 over the final 20 minutes. The Owls connected on eight of 16 shots in the third quarter to move to within 52-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

QUOTING THE COACH
"I felt we had some really great runs after they took us out early, but we came back. I feel like we really needed to be tougher and I thought our posts struggled today," head coach
Agnus Berenato said. "
Janae Omusi did a really great job for us. She hit some three's for us, got some big rebounds and was really tough in the paint."
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins took advantage of their size inside to outscore the Owls 34-16 in the paint and out-rebounded KSU, 41-17. With her 13 points on Saturday, Street extended her streak of consecutive games scoring in double figures to 15. Young made her 72nd career start to move into a tie with
Lisa Capellan (2009-14) for fifth place on Kennesaw State's Division I all-time games started list.
