Game Day Storylines
• Kennesaw State (3-6) is coming off a 12-day break after falling to Mercer on Dec. 1,
64-28. The break is the second-longest hiatus of the season behind Dec.21 -Jan. 5.
• The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at KSUOwls.com. Fans can purchase the ESPN+ digital platform for $4.99 a month or $49.99 for a year's subscription that provides access to all events broadcast on the network.
• Georgia State represents the fourth of five opponents the Owls will play from the state of Georgia. KSU is in the midst of playing four straight games against teams from the Peach State. A meeting at Georgia Tech (Dec. 16) remain on the Owls' schedule.
• A win over Georgia State will improve Kennesaw State to 3-1 versus in-state opponents following victories over Middle Georgia State (80-70) and Georgia Southern (78-59).
• KSU is looking to put back-to-back victories over Georgia State after beating the Panthers 71-61 in 2017. In that contest,
Kamiyah Street netted 26 to lead all scorers. She also recorded five steals against the Panthers.
• Rookie guard
Amani Johnson has made an impact early in her collegiate career as she opened the season with back-to-back ASUN Conference Freshman of the Week honors.
• Following her career performance of 20 points and 13 rebounds against Georgia Southern,
Simina Avram earned the ASUN Newcomer of the Week honors.
• Head coach
Agnus Berenato, who is in her 32nd season as a Division I head coach, is in her third year leading the Owls. She has an all-time record of 464-458 (.503), and guided Kennesaw State to the ASUN Conference semifinals in 2017.
• Kennesaw State has produced the last two ASUN Conference Freshmen of the Year in
Carlotta Gianolla (2017) and
Kamiyah Street (2018). Both players were unanimous picks.
• KSU returns three players who earned ASUN Conference postseason honors following the 2017-18 season. Forward
Carlotta Gianolla garnered all-academic honors, while
Kamiyah Street and
Alexis Poole were named to the all-freshman team. Street also was a second team all-conference selection.
Georgia State Notes
• Georgia State is currently 3-3 on the season and is coming off a 78-71 loss at Georgia Tech on Dec. 2.
• The Panthers have two players scoring in double figures this season. Jada Lewis leads the squad netting 16.3 points per contest while Walnatia Wright scores 10 ppg.
• Jada Lewis has the lead the Panthers in scoring all but one contest which was the season-opener against UNCG.
• The coaching staff for the Panthers in new in 2018-19, but the team returns 10 student-athletes.
• Jada Lewis was named to the All Sun Belt preseason second team.
• Shaq Miller-McCray leads the Sun Belt conference with 2.8 blocks per game
SERIES
• Thursday's match-up will mark the 11th meeting between Kennesaw State and Georgia State, and the Panthers lead the series 8-2. KSU claimed the victory last year, 71-61
MERCER RECAP
•
Alexis Poole recorded her third straight double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
• The Owls shot 61.5 percent in the first quarter of the contest.
• Kennesaw State found themselves up 16-15 at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to nine points with 1:57 remaining in the second quarter.
•
Kamiyah Street led the Owls with a trio of assists.
• Kennesaw State did a great job of scoring in the post as 30 of its points came in the paint.
• Kennesaw State went cold in the second half and surrendered the lead at the 6:27 mark in the third quarter as the Bears captured a 35-34 advantage. The Owls could never recapture the lead and fell 64-48. In the second half, the Owls shot 19.2 percent from the field but held an eight-to-seven second half offensive rebounding advantage.
UP NEXT
• The Owls will take a couple days off before returning to action Dec. 16 when they travel to Georgia Tech.
