WBB: Owls Suffer 57-53 Setback to UMBC

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Alexis Poole recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and collecting 10 rebounds, to lead the Kennesaw State women's basketball team during a 57-53 loss to UMBC to close out play at the Seton Hall Tip-Off Sunday in South Orange, N.J.
 
Sophomore guard Kamiyah Street, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and six steals, while junior forward Carlotta Gianolla contributed 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Owls (1-2).
 
Leading 53-47 with 2:26 remaining, Kennesaw State went scoreless the remainder of the game as UMBC (3-0) closed out the contest with a 10-run to secure the win. The Owls had a chance to tie the score with :04 to play, but Street missed two free throws that would have knotted the score, 55-55.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Kennesaw State started two freshmen (Amani Johnson, Peyton Lewis), two sophomores (Alexis Poole, Kamiyah Street) and one junior (Carlotta Gianolla).
  • The Owls led 39-37 heading to the fourth quarter after shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from the field and forcing four turnovers to outscore UMBC, 19-14, in the third period.
  • Kennesaw State rebounded from a slow first half when it shot 24 percent from the field to record a 48.5 field goal percentage in the second half before finishing the game with a 37.9 percent mark.
  • The Owls out-rebounded UMBC, 35-33, and held a 34-26 advantage in points-in-the-paint, points off turnovers (24-12), second-chance points (14-4) and fast break points (8-0). However, UMBC outscored KSU, 19-7, off the bench.
