MEDINAH, Ill.- The Kennesaw State women's golf team sits in a tie for sixth place in a strong field after the opening 36 holes of the Illini Women's Invitational on Course No.2 at Medinah Country Club.
The Owls carded rounds of 287-286 for a two-round total of 3-under par 573. The rounds of 287-286 were the Owls two lowest of the season. KSU is tied with Augusta for sixth and sits just two shots out of fifth place.
"I'm really pleased with the overall result today," head coach
Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We had some phenomenal play from the lineup today. Clara was key today, shooting 5-under through two rounds and Chloe's 69 was very impressive. This is one of the best fields in the nation and we have placed ourselves well heading into the final round. We played some of the best golf I've seen from this team and I'm really pleased with the attitude and execution."
Clara Aveling led the way for the Owls on Monday. The senior opened with a career-low 3-under par 69 in the first round and shot a 2-under par 70 in the second round. She is tied for seventh at 5-under par 139. Her 36-hole total score of 139 is tied for the best in school history on a par-72 course.
After opening with a 2-over par 74, freshman
Chloe Thornton fired a career-low 3-under par 69 in the second round with four birdies. She is tied for 18
th at 1-under par 143.
Roanne Tomlinson carded rounds of 73-72 for a 1-over par total of 145 and is tied for 29
th. The senior rolled in 23 pars and four birdies during the opening 36 holes.
Madison Caldwell is tied for 40
th after rounds of 71-75 for a 2-over par total of 146.
In her first action of the season,
Medy Thavong shot 79-76 for a 11-over par total of 155 and is in 82
nd.
The final round of the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah will take place on Tuesday (Oct.9). The Owls will be paired with Texas Tech and SMU and will tee off under a shotgun start at 10 a.m. ET
