KENNESAW, Ga. – Behind the solid play of senior
Wyatt Larkin and a career-round by freshman
Grant Sutliff, the Kennesaw State men's golf team turned in a 4-under par 572 and is tied for second place after 36 holes of the Pinetree Intercollegiate that opened Monday at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw.
The Owls are tied with Wisconsin and two shots behind Western Kentucky, which shot a 12-under par 276 during the second round and leads the 11-team field at 6-under par 570.
"It was a little chilly this morning but turned out to be a beautiful day, a little breezy throughout the middle of the day, but I thought overall that we played pretty steady and am happy with the way everybody contributed," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "Hats off to Grant, who in the afternoon put together the best round of his career.
"We're right there where we need to be going into tomorrow," Odom added. "Western Kentucky really played a solid round and there is nothing we can do about that."
Larkin posted rounds of 69-70 for a 5-under par total of 139 and is three shots behind Western Kentucky's Stuart Easton, who carded an opening-round round 71 and followed it with a 7-under 65 in the afternoon.
After recording a first-round 2-over par 74, Sutliff bounced back to shoot a 2-under par 70 and is tied with senior teammate
Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres (70-74) at even-par 144.
Junior
Connor Coffee (75-73) is tied for 25th at 4-over par 148, while senior
Jake Fendt (72-80) is tied for 42nd at 8-over par 152.
Sophomore
Brady Keran (74-75) shot a 5-over par 149 and is tied for 33rd to lead a group of five Owls who are playing as individuals. Freshman
Justin Kim (78-79 – 157) is tied for 53rd and senior
Adam Morris (82-79 – 161) is 56th.
Freshmen
Conner Rostowsky (80-87 – 167) and
Robert Howard (81-87 – 168) made their collegiate debuts and are tied for 82nd and 83rd, respectively.
"The course is going to be set up a little more difficult tomorrow, a little more of what we play on a daily basis, so I would like to think it will favor us," Odom said. "We're just going to go out there and try to defend our home course."
The tournament concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes. All the action can be followed live online at
