BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Kennesaw State men's tennis team opened its dual match season with a 5-2 loss to Samford (1-1) at the Samford Tennis Center in Birmingham, Ala. on Sunday (Jan. 21).

The Owls (0-1) came up just short in doubles as all three matches were highly contested. KSU picked up a win in doubles from Fermin Calvo Barcelo and Manuel Castellanos over Jake Faundez and Eduardo Lourido 6-5 in number one doubles.

Playing at number one singles, Calvo Barcelo knocked off Jake Faundez  7-5, 6-2. Senior Corey Smith picked up a win over Rossouw Norval in 6-4, 6-1 at number four singles.

"I thought we played a good match today with it being our season opener," Director of Tennis Eduardo Rincon said. "We let some big opportunities get away from us in doubles and singles ,and that eventually cost us the match. We now have some time to get back to practice and work on some aspects that we need to improve right away."

Kennesaw State continues its season traveling to Belmont on Friday, Feb. 2 in Nashville, Tennessee.
