ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Sophomore
Connor Coffee followed up a strong rookie campaign and summer with an impressive opening round while leading the Kennesaw State men's golf team during the first round of the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
Coffee, the 2017 ASUN Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, fired a 2-under par 70 and is tied for seventh place, four shots off the lead set by Florida's Alejandro Tosti, who fired a 6-under par 66.
The Owls are in 12th place in the 15-team field that includes 10 teams who finished in the Top 50 of last year's Golfstat rankings. Kennesaw State carded a 10-over par 298 and is 17 shots behind Florida, which leads the field following a 7-under par 281 round. The Gators have a one shot lead over Tennessee (282, -6).
"We had a tough start on the first six to eight holes today and battled back midway through the round but, unfortunately, finished with some bogeys," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "Connor and Jake played steady, and this is an explosive group capable of low scores and we know the golf course, so I expect improvement the next two rounds. Everyone has had a great attitude and focused game plan, but we just didn't execute the golf shots today."
Junior
Jake Fendt turned in a 2-over par 74 and is tied for 32nd, while redshirt-junior
Wyatt Larkin, who returned to collegiate competition for the first time in nearly a year, opened with a 5-over par 77 and is tied with junior teammate
Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres for 59th. Freshman
Brady Keran posted a 6-over par 78 in his first collegiate round and is tied for 66th.
The Carpet Capital Collegiate continues on Saturday with second-round play scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.. The Owls will be grouped with Cal and Clemson, and will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 9:17 a.m. All the action can be followed live on the Internet at
