The Kennesaw State women's golf team opened its 2017-18 season at the Lady Paladin Invitational on Friday (Sept. 13) and is in a three-way tie for fifth place after the first round at the par-72, 6,278-yard Furman University Golf Course.

KSU registered a 10-over par total of 298 in its first round with junior Madison Caldwell pacing the Owls with an even-par score of 72. The Dawsonville, Georgia native connected on three birdies on her final six holes of the day and is tied for 12th.

"I'm really pleased with our overall round today," Kennesaw State head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We were 8-over par through the front nine but steadied ourselves and shot 10-over par 298 to be in a tie for fifth place. This field is stacked, so our place right now is right where we want to be as we head into round two. Madison was clutch today; I'm really pleased with her round of 72. We had some nerves as we teed off for the first round of the fall but once we settled in our real games came out strong."

Junior Charlotte Charrayre and senior Henriette Nielsen each turned in a 3-over par 75 to sit in a tie for 23rd, with both players posting 11 pars in their opening rounds.

Junior Roanne Tomlinson is tied for 35th after a 4-over par 76 in her opening round. Tomlinson recorded 13 pars and a birdie during her round.

Freshman Kwan Wongsinth posted a 13-over par 85 and is tied for 90th after the opening day.

Daytona State leads the 17-team event after posting a 4-under par total of 284 with after the first 18 holes of action. Jiwon Jeon of Daytona State led all individuals with an 8-under par 64 in her first round.

The Owls continue play at the Lady Paladin Invitational in the second round with KSU teeing off from the 1st hole at 9:45 a.m. ET on Saturday (Sept. 23). Live scoring for the second round is available here.
