EUGENE, Ore. –Sophomore
Jordan Gray took home seventh place in the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on Saturday.
"This competition is the biggest accomplishment I have had in all my years of doing sports," Gray said. "I have been working towards this for so long, and while it's not the exact result I wanted score wise, I am still so excited for the outcome. There are a lot of things I could say, but they boil down to the fact that I am beyond thankful for Andy and Agne (Eggerth) and can't imagine not being an Owl."
Gray finished with 5621 points. She earned First Team All-America Honors and became the first Owl in program history to ever score points in an event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Gray's two points earned the women's team a tie for 62nd place overall at the meet.
"I'm extremely proud of Jordan," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Andy Eggerth said. "Her work ethic, grit and resilience allowed her to overcome adverse conditions better than her competitors. To come in ranked 14th and finish seventh in the nation is tremendous, and that as a sophomore. She's not done yet as she'll continue to compete internationally this summer."
She opened day two of the heptathlon with a leap of 6.04m (19'9.75 ) in the long jump which was good for sixth place in the event.
"There were a few times it was scary, especially during the long jump with my first two jumps being fouls. Andy moved me back and told me to still "bring it," Gray said.
In the pouring rain, the sophomore launched the javelin 39.97m (131'1) which set the heptathlon school record. That throw was good for eighth in the event.
In the final event of the heptathlon, she ran a time of 2:27.17 good for 14th overall in the 800m.
Gray will continue training for international competition this summer. The rest of the Owls will return in the fall and begin preparing for the 2018 track and field season.
