NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
Katey Lynch hit a three-run home run to highlight a four-run first inning, and
Alley Cutting and
Abigail Green made it stand up as the Kennesaw State softball team defeated Lipscomb, 6-2, Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the ASUN Conference series.
After jumping out to a 6-0 lead, the Owls (35-16, 11-6) had to endure a two and a half hour weather delay in the top of the fifth inning before play resumed and were able to close out their first three-game sweep of Lipscomb in Nashville.
"This was a big weekend for us. We went on the road against a really good team and competed," head coach
Pete D'Amour said. "For the most part, our defense played really well and that was good to see. Our pitchers gave us a chance and our hitters stuck to their plan.
"Now we get to concentrate on finals and take a couple days off to rest," D'Amour added.
Kennesaw State continued a trend that began on Saturday as it struck first, scoring four times in the first inning against Bisons starter McCarley Thomas (11-8).
The Owls scored all four runs with two outs, when after the first of two intentional walks to
Courtney Sutter,
Noelle Winkles singled home
Olivia Tamewitz from second base and Lynch followed with a three-run shot over the left-center field fence.
Kennesaw State added to its lead with an unearned run in the fourth and went ahead 6-0 in the fifth after Tamewitz tripled down the right field line and
Kira Czyrklis doubled down the right field line to plate Tamewitz.
After the rain delay, Lipscomb (34-16, 7-8) was finally able to break through against Cutting, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Green entered the game with two on in the sixth and retired both batters she faced before working a perfect seventh to record her third save of the season.
Cutting (17-9) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, two runs, walked one and struck out four to earn her second win of the series.
