KENNESAW, Ga. – The combination of pitching and power led the Kennesaw State softball team to an ASUN Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Jacksonville Friday afternoon at Bailey Park.

The Owls (31-12, 7-4) received solid starts from Logan Viers and Alley Cutting, and clutch relief pitching from Abigail Green, who were backed by a 21-hit attack that included three home runs among seven extra base hits, in defeating the Dolphins (22-19, 2-6) by counts of 7-1 and 6-3.

Kira Czyrklis, Jessie Mullen and Lauren Bennett each homered, while Hannah Thomason collected four hits, scored three runs and added an RBI. Olivia Tamewitz contributed three hits and scored three times, while Noelle Winkles added a pair of doubles and knocked in three runs.

In the circle, Viers (12-5) allowed four hits and a run over four innings to earn the game one victory, while Cutting (15-6) tossed five-plus innings, surrendered four hits three runs (two earned) and struck out one in the nightcap.

Green had a big day coming out of the bullpen as she worked five hitless innings, walked two and struck out four to record her first career saves.

The Owls scored in the first inning of both games, erasing a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the opener, and striking for three in the opening frame of the nightcap.

Mullen, Winkles and Thomason had two hits apiece in the opener with Mullen and Czyrklis homering and Tamewitz adding a triple.

Thomason, who had three stolen bases on the afternoon, added two more hits and scored twice, while Tamewitz and Bennett had two hits each to add to a nine-hit attack in game two.

The home run by Bennett was the second of her career and first of the season.

Kennesaw State will go for the series sweep Saturday when it hosts Jacksonville at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
