TN: Owls Set for Regular-Season Finale Saturday

4/14/2017 11:28:00 AM

KENNESAW, Ga. -- With one match remaining before the ASUN Tournament begins next Friday, the Kennesaw State tennis teams head to Lipscomb Saturday for a showdown versus the Bisons. The men's match is set for 12 p.m., with the women to follow at 4 p.m.

The KSU men (12-7, 3-2 ASUN) have already secured the No. 3-seed in next week's ASUN Tournament, which marks the program's highest finish. For the women (5-13, 1-4 ASUN), the winner of Saturday's match receives the No. 5-seed.

For the men, senior Simon Pritchard and sophomore Fermin Calvo Barcelo have paced the Owls this season. Pritchard owns a combined 31-15 record in singles and doubles and is looking to be a first-team All-ASUN pick for the fourth straight season. Calvo Barcelo is the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, and has set the team's single-season record for singles wins with 19 (19-11).

Lipscomb's men enter the match at 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the ASUN. They are battling NJIT (1-4) and USC Upstate (1-4) for one of the final two spots in the ASUN Tournament. The Bisons are led by Alejandro Manzanares, who is 10-5 in singles play, including a 5-1 mark at No. 2. Their No. 1, Rob Mitchell, is 4-0 in conference play.

Last season, in the team's regular-season finale, the men lost a 4-3 decision to Lipscomb in Kennesaw with Pritchard, Sam Slade and Drew Wendel claiming singles matches for the Owls. The all-time series favors the Owls, 5-3.

Junior Alexandra Mercado leads the Kennesaw State women with her 12 singles wins. She and Elle Baker have teamed for a 4-3 record in doubles play, including a 2-2 mark against ASUN opponents.

The Lipscomb women enter Saturday's match with a 5-16 overall mark and 1-4 record in the ASUN loop. They are led by one of the ASUN's best players, Viktoriya Dzyuba, who is 16-3 in singles play and has won 13 straight singles matches. Dzyuba has also posted a 12-1 record in doubles play with partner Denise Buberl.

The Bisons claimed last year's meeting in Kennesaw, 5-2, but the Owls lead the overall series, 5-4.
