KENNESAW, Ga. -- Junior Alexandra Mercado clinched the match with a three-set win in singles and the Kennesaw State women's tennis team held off Detroit Mercy, 4-3, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Betty Siegel Courts.

After dropping the doubles point, the Owls (2-6) rallied by winning four of the six singles matches to down the Titans (3-6).

"To win a match after dropping the doubles point the way we did shows a true team effort," said Assistant Head Coach Miranda Foley. "It was vital we got some points quickly in singles. Aspen, Jess, and Cristina did a great job in doing that. But it's still very difficult to get that final point, and I'm proud of Ale (Mercado) for handling her business, and winning 6-0 with the match on the line. It shows great maturity on her part. Now we've got to take this momentum into the weekend."

Mercado won her opening set at No. 1, dropped a back-and-forth second set 7-5, then put away Anna Davydova, 6-0, in the final set to clinch the Owls victory. Mercado rallied by winning 10 of the final 13 games after trailing 4-1 in the second set.

Aspen Jarrett got things rolling for the Owls in singles as she won, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6. Kennesaw State pulled ahead 2-1 thanks to a quick 6-1, 6-1 win from Cristina Perez-Martin at No. 1. It was 3-1 Owls after another quick win from Jessica Cantrell at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0.

But the visitors did not go quietly, winning at No. 3 and No. 4 to tie the match at 3-3 before Mercado finished it off.

Cantrell and Kennedy Craig won their doubles match, 6-2, at No. 3, but the point went to the Titans with a pair of narrow wins at No. 1 and No. 2.

The Owls homestand continues Friday versus Southern Miss. First serve at the Betty Siegel Courts is set for 1 p.m. Admission is free.
