STATESBORO, Ga. – Cristina Perez-Martin picked up a singles win, while Laura Hopton and Elle Baker teamed for a doubles victory, but Georgia Southern posted a 6-1 win over the Kennesaw State women's tennis team Sunday.

In a match that was closer than the final score would indicate, the Owls (1-6) were a tiebreak away from claiming the doubles point, while three of the five singles matches won by Eagles (9-2) went the distance.

"This is one of those matches that on paper could be interpreted as a bad loss," said Assistant Head Coach Miranda Foley. "In doubles, we were all on the same page from start to finish in terms of our energy, which was what we asked of the girls. Elle and Laura kept the doubles point alive with a great comeback win, but we fell just short at No. 3 doubles. Singles was back and forth throughout, and Cristina really did a good job of taking care of her match today. I believe this team is starting to understand the true meaning of competing. We are becoming more consistent as competitors and the results will come."

The Eagles claimed the doubles point, and extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 5 singles, until Perez-Martin rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Lindsay Truscott at No. 2.

The next three singles matches to finish were back-and-fourth three-setters that all fell Georgia Southern's way to clinch the victory.

In doubles, Hopton and Baker defeated Giulia Riepe and Arianne de Winter, 7-5, but the doubles point was decided when Ella Monsey and Emilia Bujan downed KSU's Jessica Cantrell and Kennedy Craig, 7-6 in a tiebreaker.

The Owls return home Wednesday to welcome the University of Detroit. First serve is set for 1 p.m., which is the first half of a doubleheader with the men.
