STATESBORO, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis team dropped a tough, 4-3 decision to Bethune-Cookman in non-conference action Saturday at the Willis Tennis Center in Statesboro, Ga.
Â
Junior
Alexandra Mercado stayed hot for the Owls (1-5) with her third straight singles victory and fourth in five matches. But the Wildcats (3-6) won the doubles point, and claimed three of five singles matches to secure the team victory. The sixth singles match was defaulted to the Owls.
"This was a match we could have won," said Assistant Head Coach
Miranda Foley. "Doubles, we came out too slow. We must bring more energy and excitement to that part of the match. Ale (Mercado) continued her good form by playing solid, disciplined tennis and Jess (Cantrell) also got a W under her belt against a tough opponent. The good thing about this time of the season is we get another chance tomorrow to get back at it versus an improving Georgia Southern team."
Mercado posted a three-set win at No. 1 singles over Mina Matsuba, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, while
Jessica Cantrell won at No. 5 over Phatsimo Ruele, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Cristina Perez-Martin and
Kennedy Craig each dropped back-and-fourth three-setters in singles play.

The Owls remain in Statesboro to battle Georgia Southern on Sunday at 9 a.m.
