KENNESAW, Ga. – It was an explosive beginning to Day Two of the Dr. Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament for the Kennesaw State softball team Saturday at Bailey Park.
The Owls (13-5) slugged three two-run home runs in a six-run first inning and went on to post a 9-5 victory over Dartmouth. They added three more extra base hits in an 8-1 win over UAB to cap the day.
Freshman
Olivia Tamewitz started the home run brigade against Dartmouth (0-7-1) with a shot over the right field wall that scored
Taylor Denton.
Noelle Winkles hit a two-run blast over the right-center field fence, and
Jessie Mullen showed her muscle with a drive to left-center field that gave the Owls a 6-0 lead.
Kennesaw State added three more runs in the second on an RBI base hit by Winkles and two-run single by senior
Chandler Griffin.
Sophomore
Jenna Kniss (1-0), who relieved starter
Abigail Green, earned the win after pitching five innings, allowing four hits and striking out one.
Tamewitz continued her torrid hitting against UAB (6-12) in the nightcap as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and five RBIs. She doubled in her first at-bat, singled home a run in the second, and stroked a bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning to highlight a four-run frame that extended the Owls' lead to 6-0.
The Ringgold, Ga. native finished the day hitting for the cycle as she went 4-for-7 with three runs scored, seven RBIs and a stolen base.
Freshman
Beth McCulley ignited the Owls' offense against UAB as she drove in KSU's first run with an RBI double during a three-run second inning.
One day after pitching a perfect game, freshman
Alley Cutting (6-2) was back in the circle and picked up the victory after allowing four hits, an unearned run, walking two and striking out five. She ended the game in style by striking out all three UAB batters in order.
Kennesaw State wraps up tournament play on Sunday when it hosts Akron at 11 a.m.
