DeLAND, Fla. – Senior
Noelle Winkles' two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Kennesaw State to a 5-4 victory and ASUN Conference series win over Stetson Sunday afternoon.
Â
Winkles' home run and the pitching of
Alley Cutting helped the Owls overcome five errors as Kennesaw State (24-9, 2-1) opened conference play on a positive note.
Â
After letting a 3-1 lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh, Kennesaw State gained the upper hand in the 10th when Winkles clubbed her seventh home run of the season over the right field wall to score
Haylie Shope, who began the inning at second base.
Â
Cutting (13-4) tossed her second 10-inning complete game in as many days to earn the victory after allowing six hits, one earned run, walking four and striking out eight.
Â
Winkles,
Hannah Thomason,
Katey Lynch and
Courtney Sutter each collected two hits apiece to lead an 11-hit attack by the Owls.
Â
Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Stetson rallied to tie the score and force extra innings. After a pair of singles to open the frame, the Hatters scored on an errant pickoff attempt at third base and a subsequent wild pitch.
Â
The Owls took a 2-0 lead in third inning by taking advantage of a leadoff hit-batsman.
Olivia Tamewitz was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a fly ball to right field and scored when
Taylor Denton reached base on an error.
Â
Denton then scored the second run of the inning on a two-out single to right field by Sutter.
Â
Kennesaw State added to its lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Lynch that scored Thomason, who opened the inning with an infield single.
Â
The Owls return to the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Samford in a non-conference game beginning at 6 p.m. (ET).
