NEWARK, N.J. – Extending its winning streak to seven matches, the Kennesaw State men's tennis team took down NJIT, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in ASUN Conference action in Newark, N.J.
Â
Seniors
Simon Pritchard and
Drew Wendel and sophomore
Lucas de Torres Curth each were 2-0 in the match, and once again, sophomore
Fermin Calvo Barcelo provided the clinching point in singles to keep the Owls unbeaten in ASUN play.
Â
The Gold & Black improved to 10-5 overall, 2-0 in the conference with its seventh consecutive victory. NJIT slipped to 6-8, 0-2. The seven-match winning streak stands as a KSU Division-I record, surpassing a six-match win streak last season. The 10 wins also ties the program's Division-I record for wins in a season (2016, 2012).
"We played a really solid match today," said Director of Tennis
Eduardo Rincon. "Drew and David played really well to start the doubles point and Simon and Lucas did a great job coming from behind to clinch. NJIT played better as the match went on but luckily, we capitalized on crucial points of the match. The score doesn't reflect how close the match was. It was a good experience for our guys playing out of region and indoors. This is a good team win for us."
Â
Wendel teamed with
David Durham at No. 2 doubles, and the pair posted a 6-3 victory to get the day started to the Owls. Pritchard and de Torres Curth clinched the doubles points when they survived a 7-6 win at No. 1.
Â
Pritchard, the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, extended his team's lead to 2-0 when he claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. The senior improved to 9-4 in singles play this spring and has won five consecutive matches.
Â
The Highlanders pulled within 2-1 with a win at No. 2 singles, but it was all Owls after that. de Torres Curth won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4 to make it 3-1, and the Owls clinched the victory when Calvo Barcelo defeated Richard Rangga, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Calvo Barcelo has clinched four consecutive matches for the Owls and extended his singles winning streak to seven.
Wendel and
Jake Bouchillon posted the visitor's other singles wins. Wendel's was a three-set winner at No. 5, and Bouchillon's a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Â
The Owls are back home Thursday to welcome North Florida in ASUN action. The match begins at 4 p.m. at the Betty Siegel Courts and admission is free.
