AUGUSTA, Ga. – Sophomore Medy Thavong birdied two of her final six holes on Friday afternoon, and her opening-round 73 (+1) has the Kennesaw State women's golf team in fifth place after round one of the 3M Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club.

KSU shot a 297 (+9) in the opening round. The Owls are within ten shots of the tournament leader Daytona State. Of the four teams ahead of KSU, two are ranked.

"Overall solid day on the course," said head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "Forest Hills is a very demanding layout, you can't lose focus, or it will punish you. Overall, we did a good job of being patient and capitalizing on birdie opportunities. I am very pleased with our play throughout the lineup. This team is so much fun to coach as they genuinely enjoy the experience of competing. I am excited to see how low we can go tomorrow."

Thavong is tied for 13th and sits eight shots back of leader Jiwon Jieon of Augusta State, who carded a round of seven-under 65.

Sophomore Charlotte Charrayre and senior Dulcie Sverdloff posted opening-round 74s (+2) and are tied for 19th. Sophomore Maddi Caldwell fired a 76 (+4) and is tied for 39th. Junior Henriette Nielsen carded a 77 (+5).

Round two is scheduled for Saturday. The Owls are off in Saturday's second round at 10:20 a.m. You can follow along with live scoring here.
