KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men's tennis team won its fifth straight match, rolling past Texas Rio Grande Valley, 6-1, Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Betty Siegel Courts.
 
Simon Pritchard, Lucas de Torres Curth and Fermin Calvo Barcelo each went 2-0 for the Owls, who improved to 8-5 overall with their seventh victory in the last eight matches.
 
"It was a good match today," said Director of Tennis Eduardo Rincon. "Our team adapted quickly. I was a little concerned about the quick turnaround, but I was pleased with how we responded. We did well in doubles, and then Lucas did a good job of finishing his opponent quickly in singles. It wasn't an easy match. But he jumped on him right away and got us the early singles point. It was good to see Drew (Wendel) execute his game plan, and then Fermin again with the clinch."
 
The reigning ASUN Player of the Week, Calvo Barcelo clinched his third straight match with his win at No. 3 singles. With the Owls leading 3-0, the sophomore from Argentina battled back to survive his first set in a tiebreaker and took the second set 6-3 over Elliott Johnstone for the clincher.
 
Calvo Barcelo teamed with Sam Slade for a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles as the hosts got things rolling by seizing the doubles point. In singles play, de Torres Curth extended the lead to 2-0 when he completed a quick, 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Drew Wendel followed closely after with his 6-2, 7-5 triumph at No. 5.

The Owls other singles wins came from Jake Bouchillon at No. 6 (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) and Pritchard at No. 1 (7-5, 6-4). Pritchard and de Torres Curth were victorious 6-0 in No. 1 doubles.
 
The Owls remain home Wednesday to open ASUN Conference play versus USC Upstate. The match begins at 2 p.m.
