Â
KENNESAW, Ga. – Sophomore
Fermin Calvo Barcelo clinched the match with his singles win as the Kennesaw State men's tennis team won its fourth straight, rolling past Presbyterian, 6-1, on a wet and cold Sunday afternoon at the Betty Siegel Courts.
Â
After the match was delayed two hours by wet courts, the Owls rallied for the doubles point, then took five of the six singles matches decisively to improve to 7-5. KSU has won six of its last seven. The Blue Hose slipped to 7-9.
Â
Calvo Barcelo, sophomore
Lucas de Torres Curth and senior
Simon Pritchard each finished Sunday's action with 2-0 records.
Â
"The comeback on Court 3 doubles was key," said Director of Tennis
Eduardo Rincon. "It gave us confidence going into singles and it got the momentum on our side. Simon and Jake (Bouchillon) took care of business quickly against difficult players that have given us trouble in the past. What happened in doubles had an affect on Presbyterian, and to our credit, we capitalized. I also want to extend my thanks to
Trey Borgrud and our Game Operations staff for working hard to get the courts ready to go this morning."
Â
Calvo Barcelo also helped clinched the doubles point for the Owls as he teamed with junior
Manuel Castellanos for the comeback victory. After Presbyterian won the first doubles match 6-2 at No. 2, the Owls rallied with Pritchard and de Torres Curth posting a 6-4 win at No. 1.
Â
With the doubles point hanging in the balance, Calvo Barcelo and Castellanos battled back to pull out a 7-5 win at No. 3, giving Kennesaw State the early 1-0 lead.
Â
The hosts built on that momentum, and made quick work of the Blue Hose in singles play. Pritchard put away Alexander Lykou quickly at No. 1 (6-1, 6-0) and senior
Jake Bouchillon promptly made it 3-0 when he closed out Joel Roberts at No. 6 (6-2, 6-0).
Â
The match was clinched at No. 3 by Calvo Barcelo, who defeated Diego Manzanas, 6-3, 6-0. Kennesaw State's other singles win came from de Torres Curth at No. 4 and senior
Sam Slade at No. 2.
The Owls have the week off before hosting Texas Rio Grande Valley Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Betty Siegel Courts.
